The Title Bar
The strip at the very top. It shows the file name, whether the file is saved, and the AutoSave switch.
Where the File Name Lives
The title bar tells you which file you are in and whether your work is safe. On a new file it says Book1 — that is Excel's way of saying you have not saved yet.
- File name — Book1 until you save it
- Save state — Saved or unsaved
- AutoSave — On for cloud files only
How to do it
The very top strip: AutoSave · File name · Search · Minimise, Restore, Close
AutoSave only switches on for files stored on OneDrive or SharePoint. Local files stay manual.

Reading the Title Bar

Result: Book1 = risk
A file called Book1 exists only in memory. Close Excel and it is gone.
Do this
- Save early so the title bar shows a real name
- Turn AutoSave on for files on OneDrive
- Check the title bar before closing
Avoid
- Working for hours on a file still called Book1
- Assuming AutoSave is on for a local file
- Ignoring the unsaved indicator
📌 If the title bar still says Book1, nothing has been saved to disk yet. Press Ctrl + S now.
Practice
- Open a new workbook and read the title bar.
- Save it and watch the name change.
- Look at whether AutoSave is available.

Press Ctrl + S and save the file to OneDrive to enable AutoSave. — AutoSave needs a saved cloud location. An unsaved file has nowhere to save to.
