A tab is a whole page of the ribbon. A group is one labelled box of related buttons inside it.

Pages and Boxes

If the ribbon is a book, tabs are the chapters and groups are the sections. Home has Clipboard, Font, Alignment, Number, Styles, Cells and Editing.

  1. Click a tab — The whole strip changes
  2. See the groups — Labelled boxes appear
  3. Read the label — It tells you the area

How to do it

Learn the seven Home groups and you have learned most of daily Excel.

Do this

  • Use the group label to navigate quickly
  • Learn the seven groups on the Home tab
  • Look for the dialog launcher in a group corner

Avoid

  • Confusing a group name with a button name
  • Scanning every icon instead of reading group labels
  • Forgetting groups collapse when the window is narrow
📌 Tutorials write Home ▸ Number ▸ Percent Style. Number is the group, not a button.

Practice

Quick quiz: Someone says go to Home ▸ Number ▸ Percent Style. What is Number here?
  • A button
  • A group of buttons
  • A tab
Show answer

Home (tab) ▸ Number (group) ▸ Percent Style (button) — Instructions run tab, then group, then button. The middle word is always the group.
