Jumping with Ctrl + Arrow

Ctrl plus an arrow key jumps to the edge of your data instantly, however many rows away it is.

Module 1 · Getting Started · Easy · 5 Minutes read

Travel Without Scrolling

Ctrl and an arrow key launches the cursor in that direction until it hits the last filled cell. Ten thousand rows in one keystroke.

  1. Hold Ctrl — Then press an arrow
  2. Jump to the edge — The last filled cell
  3. Press again — Jumps to the next block

How to do it

Ctrl + Down · Ctrl + Up · Ctrl + Left · Ctrl + Right

Add Shift to select as you jump: Ctrl + Shift + Down selects everything to the bottom of the data.

ItemWhat it does
Ctrl + DownTo the last filled row
Ctrl + RightTo the last filled column
Ctrl + HomeBack to cell A1
Ctrl + EndTo the last used cell

Ctrl + RightLast filled columnSelects to it
Ctrl + HomeCell A1Selects to it
Ctrl + EndLast used cellSelects to it

Result: Ctrl + Shift

Ctrl moves you. Ctrl + Shift moves you and selects everything on the way.

Do this

  • Use Ctrl + Down instead of scrolling
  • Add Shift to select a whole column of data
  • Use Ctrl + Home to get back to the top

Avoid

  • Scrolling through thousands of rows by hand
  • Being surprised when a blank cell stops the jump
  • Confusing Ctrl + End with the real last row
📌 Add Shift and it selects instead of just moving. Ctrl + Shift + Down is the fastest way to grab a column.

Practice

Quick quiz: Ctrl + Down stops after 20 rows but your data goes on for 500. Why?
  • Excel only jumps 20 rows at a time
  • There is a blank cell at row 21
  • The rest of the data is hidden
Show answer
