The Status Bar

The strip at the very bottom. It shows totals for whatever you have selected, plus the view and zoom controls.

Answers Without a Formula

Select some numbers and look at the bottom right. Excel has already counted them, added them and averaged them. No formula required.

Select some numbers — Any range
Look bottom right — Count, sum and average
Read the answer — No formula needed

How to do it

The bottom strip: mode · quick stats · view buttons · zoom slider

Right-click the status bar to choose which statistics appear. There are far more than the default three.

Item	What it does
Left side	Ready, Enter or Edit mode
Middle	Quick statistics
Right side	View buttons
Far right	Zoom slider and percentage

What the Status Bar Tells You

Select a column of numbers ▸ Average, Count and Sum appear at the bottom right

Use it to sanity check a total before you trust a formula.

Do this

Select numbers and read the totals at the bottom
Right-click it to add more statistics
Watch the mode indicator when buttons grey out

Avoid

Writing a formula for a total you only need once
Ignoring the status bar completely
Missing the Edit mode warning

📌 The mode indicator on the left tells you why a button might be greyed out — Excel is still in Edit mode.

Select them and read the Sum on the status bar

Select the range ▸ read Sum at the bottom right — The status bar gives you the answer without changing the sheet at all.
