Quick Stats on the Status Bar

Select any numbers and Excel instantly shows their sum, count and average at the bottom of the screen.

The Answer Before You Ask

You do not always need a formula. For a one off check — does this column add up to what the invoice says — the status bar answers in the time it takes to select.

Select the numbers — Any range, even scattered
Look bottom right — The stats are already there
Move on — Nothing was added to the sheet

How to do it

Select any range ▸ read Average, Count and Sum at the bottom right

Click a status bar figure and Excel copies it, so you can paste the total somewhere else.

Item	What it does
Sum	Total of the selection
Count	How many cells have content
Average	The mean value
Ctrl + select	Works on scattered cells too

Checking an Invoice Total

Select the amount column ▸ Sum: 48,500 ▸ compare with the printed total

What you select	Sum shows	Count shows
10 numbers	Their total	10
10 numbers, 2 blank	Total of 8	8
Numbers plus text	Total of numbers	All non-empty
Scattered cells	Total of them	How many

Result: Instant total

The status bar is the fastest audit tool in Excel, and it changes nothing.

Do this

Use it to sanity check totals before trusting a formula
Ctrl + select scattered cells and still get a total
Click a figure to copy it

Avoid

Building a formula for a one off check
Assuming it ignores filtered rows
Forgetting text cells inflate the Count

📌 These figures ignore hidden and filtered out rows only if you use SUBTOTAL. The status bar counts what is selected.

Practice

Select a column and read the Sum.
Ctrl + select scattered numbers and read it again.
Compare the status bar to a SUM formula.

Compare the selection with the formula's range. — A mismatch almost always means the formula is missing rows at the top or bottom.
