The Mini Toolbar
The small floating bar of formatting buttons that appears when you select text or right-click a cell.
Formatting Where Your Mouse Already Is
Rather than travelling to the ribbon, the mini toolbar appears right next to your selection with the most used formatting buttons on it.
- Select or right-click — The bar floats up
- Click a button — Font, size, bold, colour
- Move away — It fades out
How to do it
Select a cell or right-click ▸ the small floating bar appears just above the selection
Turn it off at File ▸ Options ▸ General ▸ Show Mini Toolbar on selection, if you find it distracting.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Appears on select | Faintly at first |
| Appears on right-click | Above the context menu |
| Common buttons | Font, size, bold, fill, format painter |
| Fades away | When you move the mouse off |
What Is On It
Right-click a cell ▸ the mini toolbar appears above the menu
| Button | Same as |
|---|---|
| Font and size | Home ▸ Font |
| Bold and italic | Home ▸ Font |
| Fill colour | Home ▸ Font ▸ Fill |
| Format painter | Home ▸ Clipboard |
| Number format | Home ▸ Number |
| Merge and center | Home ▸ Alignment |
