The Hidden Full Menu

The ribbon shows the common options. The little diagonal arrow in a group corner opens the complete dialog box, where every setting for that group lives.

  1. Find the arrow โ€” Bottom right of a group
  2. Click it โ€” A dialog box opens
  3. Everything is there โ€” Far more than the ribbon shows

Result: Ctrl + 1

Ctrl + 1 is the single most useful shortcut in Excel formatting.

Do this

  • Press Ctrl + 1 instead of hunting the ribbon
  • Look for the corner arrow when an option is missing
  • Explore each tab of the Format Cells dialog once

Avoid

  • Assuming the ribbon shows every option
  • Missing the arrow because it is very small
  • Not knowing Ctrl + 1 exists
๐Ÿ“Œ Anything you cannot find on the ribbon is probably behind a dialog box launcher.

Practice

Quick quiz: You want to apply superscript to some text but cannot find it on the ribbon. Where is it?
  • It does not exist in Excel
  • Behind the Font group dialog launcher, or Ctrl + 1
  • On the Insert tab
