Collapsing and Expanding the Ribbon
The ribbon takes up a lot of screen. You can collapse it to a single row of tabs and get the space back.
More Room for Your Data
On a small laptop the ribbon eats a third of the screen. Collapse it and you get four or five more rows of data, with the tabs still one click away.
- Double click a tab — The ribbon collapses
- Click a tab once — It appears temporarily
- Double click again — It stays open
How to do it
Double click any tab name or Ctrl + F1
Ctrl + F1 toggles it. When collapsed, a single click still shows the ribbon until you use a button.

On a small laptop, collapsing the ribbon is the cheapest screen space you will ever get.
Do this
- Collapse the ribbon on a small screen
- Learn Ctrl + F1 rather than double clicking
- Use single click to peek at a collapsed ribbon
Avoid
- Panicking when the ribbon vanishes
- Double clicking a tab by accident and not knowing why
- Forgetting the ribbon is still there, just collapsed
📌 Collapsed is not gone. Click any tab name and the ribbon slides back down for one command.
Practice
- Press Ctrl + F1 and watch the ribbon collapse.
- Click a tab once and see it peek out.
- Press Ctrl + F1 again to restore it.
