Ribbon Display Options
Three ways to show the ribbon: full, tabs only, or hidden completely. Useful when presenting or on a small screen.
Three Levels of Ribbon
Beyond collapsing, Excel offers a full auto-hide mode that removes the ribbon entirely. Perfect when you are showing a sheet on a projector.
- Full ribbon — Tabs and buttons, the default
- Tabs only — Buttons appear when needed
- Auto-hide — Nothing but your data
How to do it
Ribbon Display Options button (top right) ▸ Full screen mode · Show tabs only · Always show
In auto-hide mode, click the three dots at the very top of the screen to bring the ribbon back.

Result: 3 modes
Use full screen mode when showing a sheet on a projector or a video call.
Do this
- Use full screen mode when presenting
- Use tabs only on a small laptop
- Press Esc to escape full screen mode
Avoid
- Entering full screen and not knowing how to leave
- Confusing this with collapsing the ribbon
- Losing the title bar and thinking the file closed
📌 Auto-hide also removes the title bar, so the file name disappears too. Do not panic.
Practice
- Try all three ribbon display modes.
- Enter full screen mode and escape from it.
- Decide which mode suits your screen.
