Expanding the Formula Bar
Long formulas get cut off. The little arrow at the right end of the formula bar makes it several lines tall.
Room to Read a Long Formula
A nested IF or a long lookup will not fit in one line. Expand the formula bar and you can read the whole thing at once.
- Find the chevron — Right end of the formula bar
- Click it — The bar grows taller
- Click again — It shrinks back
How to do it
The small down chevron at the right end of the formula bar or Ctrl + Shift + U
You can also drag the bottom edge of the formula bar to make it exactly as tall as you need.

Result: Ctrl+Shift+U
Expand the bar and use Alt + Enter, and even a long formula becomes readable.

- Expand the bar when writing long formulas
- Use Alt + Enter to break a formula into lines
- Drag the edge for a custom height
Avoid
- Scrolling sideways through a long formula
- Writing a long formula on one unreadable line
- Forgetting to collapse it again on a small screen
📌 Alt + Enter inside a formula adds a line break. Combined with an expanded bar, long formulas become readable.
