The Name Box
The small box to the left of the formula bar. It shows the address of the selected cell and jumps you anywhere.
Where Am I, and Go There
The Name Box does two jobs. It tells you which cell you are in, and if you type an address into it, it takes you straight there.
- Read it — Shows the current cell address
- Type an address — Press Enter to jump
- Name a range — Type a name to save it
How to do it
The small box on the left of the formula bar ▸ type an address ▸ press Enter
Type A1000 and press Enter to jump there instantly, without scrolling.

What You Can Type
Name Box ▸ type D500 ▸ Enter ▸ you are at D500
| Type this | What happens |
|---|---|
| A1 | Jumps to cell A1 |
| D500 | Jumps to D500 without scrolling |
| A1:C20 | Selects that whole range |
| SalesData | Creates or jumps to that name |
| 3:3 | Selects the whole of row 3 |
Result: Type and jump
Faster than scrolling, and it works over thousands of rows instantly.
Do this
- Use it to jump instead of scrolling
- Name your important ranges here
- Use the dropdown to find named ranges
Avoid
- Scrolling for a minute to reach row 900
- Ignoring it as decoration
- Naming a range with a space in it — that is not allowed
📌 Select a range first, then type a name in the Name Box, and that range now has a name you can use in formulas.
Practice
- Jump to cell Z500 using the Name Box.
- Select a range and give it a name.
- Use the dropdown to jump back to it.
