Selecting Non-Adjacent Ranges

Hold Ctrl while selecting to pick blocks that are not next to each other, then act on them together.

Picking and Choosing

Sometimes the cells you want are scattered. Hold Ctrl and click each one, and Excel treats them all as a single selection.

Select the first block — Click or drag as normal
Hold Ctrl — Keep it held down
Select more — Each block joins the selection

How to do it

Select the first range ▸ hold Ctrl ▸ select the next range ▸ repeat

Release Ctrl before you click again or you will lose everything and start over.

Drag	Adds a whole block
Ctrl + click again	Removes a cell you added

What Works and What Does Not

Select A1:A5 ▸ hold Ctrl ▸ select C1:C5 ▸ both are now selected

Result: Ctrl + click

Non-adjacent selection is for formatting and charting, not for sorting or pasting.

Do this

Hold Ctrl the whole time you are selecting
Use it to format scattered cells at once
Use it to build a chart from separate columns

Avoid

Letting go of Ctrl and losing the selection
Trying to sort a scattered selection
Trying to paste into scattered cells

Ctrl-select three separate blocks.
Colour them all at once.
