The Tell Me Search Box
The search box on the ribbon finds any command by name and runs it, so you never have to remember which tab it lives on.
Describe It, Do Not Hunt It
Cannot remember whether Freeze Panes is on View or Window? Type freeze into the search box and Excel offers you the command directly.
- Click the search box — Or press Alt + Q
- Type what you want — In plain words
- Click the result — The command runs
How to do it
The Search box on the ribbon ▸ type what you want ▸ click the command
Alt + Q jumps straight to the search box. It is the single most useful shortcut for a beginner.

For a beginner this is the single most useful thing on the ribbon.
Do this
- Press Alt + Q when you cannot find a command
- Type plain words, not menu paths
- Use it to learn where commands live
Avoid
- Hunting through tabs for five minutes
- Not knowing the search box runs commands
- Typing exact menu names instead of plain words
